When Did You Fall in Love with Hip Hop?

Magazine Illustrations, Layout Design

The quarterly magazine created by the University of Michigan’s College of Literature, Science, and Arts highlights inspiring stories about students, faculty, staff, and alumni, with each edition spotlighting unique cultural moments. For a special feature celebrating 50 years of hip-hop, I designed a series of collage-style graphics that explore the genre's profound influence on culture, art, and politics. The visuals combine newspaper clippings, graffiti textures, and fashion imagery to evoke hip-hop’s rebellious spirit and creative expression. A blend of photography and illustrations honors the genre’s versatility, while elements like cassette stacks pay tribute to mixtape culture and its handcrafted roots. These designs celebrate the artisans of hip-hop—DJs scratching records, breakdancers performing, musicians rapping, and designers shaping street style—capturing the vibrancy and evolution of this cultural movement.
